Theory Beyond Design is a Lexington, Kentucky woodworking studio founded by Kara Hill in 2018 around a simple but beautiful idea: that plant propagation — the act of rooting cuttings in water — deserves to be displayed as beautifully as the plants that grow from it. Using locally sourced maple, walnut, and oak, Kara and her partner Andy handcraft sculptural wood vessels and wall pieces that transform the often-overlooked water-rooting stage into living art.

Kara designs each piece using CAD software, then prepares, assembles, and finishes every item by hand. The goal is clean and focused: make plant care approachable and beautiful for people who want greenery in their lives without the complexity. Her designs are modern and structural, built to stand beautifully on their own while putting the rooting plant at center stage.
