About
Lloyd Hughes is a fourth-generation metalsmith in Lexington who hand-forges steel and bronze into furniture, lighting, clocks, bowls, and architectural commissions. Studying under master Chicago blacksmith Bill Valerius in the late 1980s shaped his sensibility: rooted in a centuries-old craft yet unmistakably contemporary in form. His use of bronze as a forging medium — rather than the more common casting — is an unusual distinction that sets his work apart. A Kentucky Crafted–certified artist, Hughes also holds an architectural profile with the Kentucky Arts Council.
